By small and simple things Great things brought to pass

Hello from sunny AZ!! This week has been golden!! Not just because of the sun but the people!

We have been working with 1 investigator and since I got here we haven't had any luck in finding anyone new to teach. After 8 weeks of being here, working hard, and searching high and low... WE FOUND AN ABSOLUTE GOLDEN INVESTIGATOR. GREAT things are coming to pass!

DONALD:
His name is Donald and he practically fell into our hands. Lary (the texan cowboy convert) texted us before our lesson and said change of plans, can you teach the restoration? So confused we said sure??? Once we got there he explained that his son in law was back in the picture and wanted to learn more!! 5 minutes into our lesson Donald bore his testimony of his love of our savior and set his own baptism date!!!! WHAT. this is the kind of situation missionaries dream about and I am so lucky to be apart of his conversion! Saturday we had a church tour with him and the spirit was incredibly strong as he shared his reasoning behind investigating. ALL SUCH GREAT THINGS! He came to church on Sunday too!! And Blake he is from Ohio:)

The Knight Family:
On Monday we had an FHE with a part member family the Knights. The dad is from england and has the coolest accent, he is the non member in the family. So right before we got there there was this  huge fight with the dad and the son. We sat down with the younger son and the parents and just talked for a while. Bro Knight is an engineer and when they first moved to tucson he owned a guitar tune up shop- the only one down here that fender guitars would let work on their guitars. Because he was an engineer he came up with these crazy cool ways to fix things and was so good about it.They have a ton of really cool guitars at their house and the pool is even shaped like a guitar!! the lesson we had planned was the restoration but we had 2 activities that were all about family bonding. So finally the older son came out and we had this activity where one person was blind folded and was trying to eat this donuts tied to a string and there we 2 people telling him what to do: one leading to the donuts and one away- it was so funny!! Then we had this activity where we wrote things about the apostasy on the outside of balloons and tied them to their ankles. They had to pop each other balloons to figure out what was on the inside that was restored. It was so funny to watch them run around trying to pop the balloons! after brother knight got a little teary eyed as  we bore our testimonies of families and the blessings we have in them because of the restoration. he even said that he has never had so much fun with missionaries before and he has been taught by a ton of missionaries before (i hope this means we can come back)! I can tell that his heart is softening by these small and simple things.

Peter Pan:
Friday While we were cleaning we saw this little boy about 6 years walking down the street with a little rolling suit case, some flippers, and a rolled up yoga mat. He was running away from home haha!! We began talking to him about where he was going and why he ran away then he unrolled his handy dandy yoga mat bed and started showing us yoga moves he learned in his kindergarten class like 'the dog' and 'the warrior' hahah. Then soon enough up drive his parents and he promptly told us he wasn't going home and he never wanted to grow up. His parents said he had been watching a little too much home alone. It was so cute and so funny!

District Blitz
i finally got to go knock doors for my first time ever! Most the people were really nice to us, some just saw our name tags are were like oh not interested and shut the door so sinking fast. haha. Another missionary said that when people would do that to him he would say "oh wait were selling organic tree frogs!" and sometimes people would laugh at that and let him talk so we were going to try this out but no luck so far getting people to listen haha...

General Women's Conference was amazing!!! If you didn't get a chance to listen to it, do so now! One of my favorite talks was giving by Sister Bonnie H. Cordon. She focused her talk on
Proverbs 3: 5-6

5 ¶ Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
This includes 1. A warning: lean not unto thine own understanding 2. A promise: He shall direct they paths
When we lean we move to one side or the other and as a result are off balanced. If we can trust in the Lord and acknowledged him always we will stay balanced and centered on Christ. As you do this you will come to know the Savior and nothing in this world can defeat us.
I am so grateful for this gospel and the balance it brings to my life. I know that when I am truly trusting in the Lord I feel grounded and that sense of equilibrium keeps me diligent and joyful! I am filled with gratitude and love for each of you and I hope you never doubt the influence you have on me and many others!
Love, Sister Carter

~Stay balanced and centered on Christ ~

Small and Simple, yet Huge and Profound

Hello I hope everyone is doing well and know that I love you each so much and I am so lucky to have each of you in my life!!
Happy Late St. Patricks day!!

This week has been full of lots of crazy but lots of good!

Prissilla:
Prissilla is the girlfriend of a less active member that we met the first day I got here. Which was SO awkward. haha I will tell you that story next summer. But ever since then we have been teaching her and we have a baptism date set for April 11th!! We have to work out a few things, like living arrangements and getting her to church. She works as a care giver on the weekends and can never come to church. But guess what..... she came up with the money last minute to take her nursing board for the third and last time... and she PASSED!!! And is now looking for a new job!!....And we brought a member with us to one of her lessons that just Happpened to be the secretary at a nursing clinic in central tuscon..... and they are HIRING!! And Prissilla went and applied!!!...And she is HIRED AND STARTS ASAP!! AH  m   i   r   a   c   l   e   s The lord really does work in mysterious was, I have no doubt that he has so many more blessings waiting for Prissilla!!!!
Half way through our lesson with Prissilla this week some Jahovahs witnesses come knocking on her door and we were like woooaaaaahhhhh there back off. Sis Adams casually stood behind Prissilla. haha

Birds & Lemons & awesome crazy people:
Our lessons all fell though on Wednesday so we decided to try some people on a part member/ less active list. We only had this name of a family and literally no idea their background. We knocked on the door so see when we could come back and have a lesson with their family (after we figure out what on earth thier situation was and why they name was on this list) only she willingly threw open her door and told us to come in. Whattt?? that doesnt happen. so of course we headed in. She is literally a crazy bird lady. She has sooooo mannnyy peeettsss. Including a a giant mccaw, all these other mccaws, a grey feathered africian, and a ton of tropical birds with lots of colors and it was nuts. they fly all around the house. and she just sat us down and had us hold on to a bird and talked to us. We still had no idea her story with the church and if shes a less active or non member or what, but she was sooo nice to us! Her husband showed us to their back yard which is this insane little oasis and filled us with grocery bags of oranges and lemons and told us all about every cactus in their back yard. They were so crazy but so kind!!

Timing and Tanita:
We went to go see Tanita our recent convert today, we havent seen her in about 2 weeks, literally right as we got out of the car she drove up because she had forgotten something so she was stopping at home so quick and we HAPPENDED to be there at the SAME time.  Shes been having a rough time and it was really good that we got to talk to her.

Mormon Super Bowl:
We decided to stop by Sis Charters house who is a recent convert and SO FUNNY. She is so out going and incredibly strong. While we were there we basically had a lesson with her friend Leah over this video app that sends minute long videos. Leah stopped taking lessons from the sisters in central becaue they were too pushy with her and she got pretty offened but she was willing to talk to us!
Leahs kids have been hearing about General Conference so Sis Charter was trying to explain it to her. Leah was calling it the 'Mormon Super Bowl' and just saying all these most funny thigns about it. haha this was one of the best nights of my mission becaue of Leah and Sis Charter, their love for food at any function, and their love of the gospel!!! She is amazing.
And she's so excited for this 'Mormon Super Bowl'  next weekend haha

The scripture I have been ponderizing could not have tied in better to the weeks work: In Alma 37:6 we read "..., that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.."
I know that with out a doubt God leads and guides this work. I have seen so many small things that are either planting seeds, developing into miracles, or helping to strengthen a testimony; even my own. There are many great things that are coming from the smallest of desires and actions!! Many people here being prepared and I am so lucky to be included in even one conversation along the path of individuals conversion!

All my love,
Sister Carter

I LOVE TRIOS

Hello family and friends!!

I heard some pretty exciting news from Jeff and Alicia, YAYYY CONGRATULATIONS! Will is going to be the best big brother💙

Sister  Adams is amazing, awesome, adventerous, active, and always sweet:) She is from Pocatello Idaho, is 22, went to BYU-I for several years, loves to clogg and irish dance, says the funniest sassy comments, is the hardest worker and I am so lucky to have her as an additional companion!!! I LOVE being in a trio!

The two week spring break started here which is a blessing and a curse! Our wards looked like branches yesterday because almost everyone heads down to mexico, but anyone  who stayed has been outside making it possible for us to talk to people in all the areas that we can't knock doors!

We had an amazing experience with prayer this week. As we were trying to contact people who got lost in our area book we met an older lady named Jenny. A few months ago some Elders ran into her and gave her a Book of Mormon. We have stopped by her house so many times and never had anyone answer. Come Wednesday we tried again and she opened up the door! We had a long conversation with her and learned that her grandaughter was recently killed in a shooting down town and her family is having a really hard time. As we began to share a message about the plan of salvation I had the feeling that we should ask if we could say a prayer with her. I offered the prayer and I know that all the things I was saying came straight from the Holy Ghost. I know that she needed to hear those things to feel comforted. It was an emotional experience to feel such strong power of the Lord through myself as I testified of His love and concern for her. Never doubt the power of prayer!!

At zone meeting this week we talked about burying our weapons of war. Our zone leaders went outside, dug a big hole, and had us throw a piece of paper with whatever our 'weapons' were that are holding us back from reaching our potential. No you don't have to dig a hole, but I want to challenge eveyone to think of one thing this week that is possibly a distraction or limits you in any way and try to burry it for the week! I have noticed my abilty to focus is much more effective with just one of my 'weapons' stuck in a hole out in the middle of the desert! haha rip with the scorpions

We taught a few lessons about faith this week and i love this quote by Elder Andersen,

Faith Is Not by Chance, but by Choice By Elder Andersen
"Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is not something ethereal, floating loosely in the air. Faith does not fall upon us by chance or stay with us by birthright. It is, as the scriptures say, “substance …, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith emits a spiritual light, and that light is discernible. Faith in Jesus Christ is a gift from heaven that comes as we choose to believe and as we seek it and hold on to it. Your faith is either growing stronger or becoming weaker. Faith is a principle of power, important not only in this life but also in our progression beyond the veil. By the grace of Christ, we will one day be saved through faith on His name. The future of your faith is not by chance, but by choice."

Boy oh boy do we have to make the choice to have faith every day! Satan really hates missionaries and throws stupid stuff at us every day to make us doubt. Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith!! Choosing to have faith is probably the best example of agency we could be given on this earth!!

I love you all SO much! And please let me know if I can do anything for any of you!

Xoxoxo

Sonoran Dogs, Sleepovers and Singing

What a beautiful rainy week it has been here!!!

Thank you for all the love and support i am so grateful for amazing family and friends!!

We are meeting with a part member/ super less active family named the Smiths. Brother Smith is hard of hearing and i will get to sign to him during lessons!! I need to brush up on my ASL gospel vocabulary but im SO excited:)

All the new missionaries and their trainers had a training meeting at the mission office, it was so nice go see everyone i came here with! It was a huge blessing to have some familiar faces and talk with good friends. It is so pretty up there with less cactus, more people:) i really hope i get to serve up that way some day!

Sister Drown locked our keys in the car Haha so long story short since we are like a  25 minute drive from our area some members took us to some sisters apartment who live in central tucson and we had a little sleepover at their apartment!!!! They live in one of the more crime ridden parts of town so we listened to gun shots and sirens all night. so that was fun

EXCHANGES!!
For exchanges I got  to go to Sahurita, like 40 minutes towards the border from here with SISTER TANNER. One minute it will be the boonies then BAM theres an incredibly nice subdivision...?

We woke up to the elders over here (who are also the zone leaders) asking us to come help this brother of one of their members move. So we show up and we started packing up his trailer home. It was one of the nastiest places I have ever seen in my whole life. (so i thought).  The location we moved him to was even worse. It was absolutely filthy and grimey and i honestly dont even think i could call it a shack. It was horrible. but he was so happy to be at this new place because it was on 2 acres and he only pays less than 200 a month for electricity and water basically. The roof is caving in theres places where there are huge holes in the floor. The guy who used to live there died 2 weeks ago and so theres a ton of his stuff everywhere. The guy who died was an artist so the man moving into the home let us go through the art hahaha though I might need to burn my clothes from bed bugs i  grabbed one of the paintings so i could never forget that experience! :)

And he let me hang up some art all around his new place- not as fun as hanging art while working at Heirloom but it was a close second!

After this we got to help out at the food bank, this was amazing!!!!! All the workers here are incredible- the one in the picture is a man named Rick who has 2 girls and is so kind and funny and loves the sister missionaries and treats us so well! he gave us a bunch of food to take home!!! (Blessings)

After this we studied- i love studying with sister tanner she is so in tune with the spirit (she also leaves in 2 weeks, super sad). All the lessons we had today fell through and so did dinner but I had the best time with sister tanner and we were so happy the whole day even though so many doors got shut on us! We tried these crazy fruits that grow on top of cactus, ate at a yummy Hawaiian bbq place and drove past the pond in the middle of one of the nice neighborhoods. We finished off the day at the ward valentines day party, talked to some really nice members, had some great desserts, and then pranked the elders car that was parked there! That stake center is really cool it fits right in with the desert, it almost looks like a huge Catholic church.

At dinner sunday night this hispanic family fed us real SONORAN DOGS!! Its basically a hot dog with tons of stuff on it. They made us douse ours in Jalapeño salsa then shove as much of it as we could in our mouth. While doing this I got the salsa allll over and it was even up my nose hahahh. My nose was literally b.u.r.n.i.n.g all night long! If i had any nose hairs it for sure singed every last one off. haha

This week I have had some amazing experiences recognizing the hand of the God in my life. I know that there is no chance I could be doing this work with out the help of the Savior. I have been driven to my knees asking for help and during these times I have felt an overwhelming flood of companionship. I know that Christ walks every step of this journey with me!! How lucky am I to have someone so endearing watching over me!

And I know that the Lord is proud of each and every one of you, never forget that!!

Love you with all my heart,

Sister Carter

Temples and Cow Tounges

Its rodeo week down here!! Which means that school and just about everything else is cancled/ closed thursday - sunday, its nuts!

On Tuesday Sister Passey came to study with us, she is so great i love her so much! She told us that the sunday before the open house all the misisonaries get a special tour by elder wilson of the 70 and sister misisonaries get to work at the temple open house! Only sisters!! They will need help 8-9 every day and we will get to take shifts a couple days a week come June! SO EXCITING!!!
On Wednesday after district meeting we wanted in n out so bad but it was literally one block outside of our zone. One block!! So there was this big fiasco trying to ask president if we could go get some shakes and fries haahah but no worries we prevailed!! Such a blessing😊

We had some really great teaching experiences thursday from a lesson on the priesthood with Lary then 65 yr old texan cowboy recent covert hes awesome, joey the handicapped little boy who has the biggest heart, and the recently baptized Hargreaves family. The Hargreaves had some questions about the atonement and scriptures we aksed them to read. They really studied the chapters and had so many great questions to ask! Some were really hard to answer but that lesson was 100 perfect lead by the spirit as we found the answers to their questions. They are the best. And Jess the mom gives the best hugs. They are so great.

I ATE COW TOUNGE!!!! ahhhhh it was the oddest texture but didnt taste that bad! The taste buds of the tounge were awful though.
Our ward mission leaders both served in Soth America  (one in Beezers missionthe other in Uncle Nates) and thought it would be funny to show us whatthey ate!😝

We have the best members (even if they feed us bizzare things).
President Monson gave a talk in April 2009 titled 'Be of Good Cheer' and I wanted to share some of it with you.

---Today, however, I’d like us to turn our thoughts and our attitudes away from the troubles around us and to focus instead on our blessings as members of the Church. The Apostle Paul declared, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
None of us makes it through this life without problems and challenges—and sometimes tragedies and misfortunes. After all, in large part we are here to learn and grow from such events in our lives. We know that there are times when we will suffer, when we will grieve, and when we will be saddened. However, we are told, “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.”
How might we have joy in our lives, despite all that we may face? Again from the scriptures: “Wherefore, be of good cheer, and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you.”
"I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
My brothers and sisters, each of us has that light in his or her life. We are not left to walk alone, no matter how dark our pathway.

I testify to you that our promised blessings are beyond measure. Though the storm clouds may gather, though the rains may pour down upon us, our knowledge of the gospel and our love of our Heavenly Father and of our Savior will comfort and sustain us and bring joy to our hearts as we walk uprightly and keep the commandments. There will be nothing in this world that can defeat us.
My beloved brothers and sisters, fear not. Be of good cheer. The future is as bright as your faith.---

I love you all so much!! I am learning so much about my relationship with my Savior and how to truly follow in his footsteps. I LOVE teaching the gospel with all my heart!! I hope everyone is well and please let me know if I can do anything for any of you

So much love, xo Sister Carter

Second Week in Tucson!

Thank you for all the birthday wishes and packages this last week!!! I truly have the most wonderful family and friends!!!!

I thought I had done some pretty hard things in my life and that I knew exactly what hard work was, but I can say with out a doubt this is the hardest thing I have ever done. Emotions are such a confusing thing. I have been trying really hard to discern what is my own doubt, what is the adversary and what the Holy Ghost is trying to tell me but they all seem to be mushing together. Creating a very mushy emotional me:) Through this though, I have been able to see some of the greatest tender mercies.

One of the hardest things here has been the car. That sounds so ungrateful, I am glad we have a car it's just been a challenge for me. During the long quiet drives in the car my mind often wanders to thoughts of home, the things I want to be better at,or the things I could be doing. Which leads to zero motivation. And boredom. And lack of interest.

Wednesday was one of the best days, not because it was my birthday but because God gave me the best gifts.

All of our lessons canceled and the only thing we had to do was deliver thank you notes to members who fed us. I convinced my companion that we should park the car walk! And she said yes!  It was a beautiful 75 degrees outside and it's a lot easier to talk to people walking around than stuck in a car! This was a huge shift in attitude for both of us as we changed the situation to be more productive. We were able to talk to several people, found actual green grass/ bushes, gave out multiple pass along cards and Book of Mormon's, talked to less actives,  and we even set up an appointment with a man who the missionaries have been trying to get a hold of for a few months! (though it was borderline stalking because I said we should wait outside his house till he left to work. Which happened to be 5 minutes after we got there but the encounter was still a little awkward because he knew we were waiting for him haha)  I finally know what its like to have sore missionary feet:)

Another funny story from this great day...  one of the people we were talking to was a man holding a sign on the street corner dancing. We get talking to him and I told him if he took a Book of Mormon we would go to the store he was advertising for. He gave me the craziest look but was smiling super nicely and was so kind to us! Well when i read the word 'smoke' on his sign I was thinking like a bbq pit or something...as we left my companion explained to me that it wasn't a smoke pit/ bbq store or anything.... it was an actual smoke shop. hahahah I keep reminding myself that I'm not in Utah

To top it all of the Hargreaves family (who got baptized on Thursday!!) had us over for dinner. Twice baked potatoes. AND steak!! It was a 5 star meal! I have only known them, for 2 weeks but i can see their light and love so strongly. Their grandparents who are members -the grandpa is performing the baptism- got to watch them pray for the first time. This family is amazing.

It was a very unique birthday experience not being with Madison for our first birthday apart, but regardless I saw the hand of God in so many ways.

Some things about the ward:
The ward members are so great here. Every Friday we send them a spiritual though and ask them to pray for certain things with investigators. I am loving working with members.

THE FARM
Along with serving at the horse therapy center we help out at a farm!
1. we cut bags and bags of spinach
2. turned chicken poop for a few hours
3. I MILKED A GOAT (I also managed to wear half of the milk hah)

As I was studying this week I read the following line from Elder M. Russell Ballard,

"You can never do more for the Lord than He can do for you"

This is something I have seen in my own life many times over the last few weeks, and even in the lives of people surrounding me. It is humbling to know that ultimately God is the one behind everything I am doing here and He will make everything possible. This doesn't mean we should discontinue our diligent efforts, it is a meant to be a support.

Allow yourself to see the work of God in your life this next week.

All my love,

Sister Carter

First Week in Tucson!

Hello family and friends!

First and foremost.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THIS WEDNESDAY TO MADISON!!!! The big 15 wahooo! You have the  most caring character. I love your concern for others and your eagerness to help make others happy. This will be your first birthday without me there and it makes me incredibly sad to miss this special day with you, but I hope this new year of teenage fun brings much excitement!   Everyone watch out when she gets her learners permit;)

Other fun mission updates:

The Tucson Temple open house will be the first few weeks in June and the dedication will l be in  August. The members are very excited!

Mission schedules world wide have changed! The biggest changes are that we are now in control of when we have personal and companion study. If have things to do in the morning then we can move study around our schedule. Second, instead  of planning at  night, we plan in the morning. This leaves us with 30 minutes at night to write in our journals!

I made it safely to my first area in Tucson! I am serving in this tiny little are in south east Tucson. We live in an apartment complex about 25 minutes away from our area- which means we get to drive a car! We cover two wards in this area. There are pretty strict laws against proselyting in this which means we can only teach people who ward members refer us to. A bunch of part member families or less active family's live in the area and they are the main focus for us. About two transfers ago some elders were in this area and offended the members, so we are working really hard to gain some trust back. My companions name is Sister Drown, from Kearns Utah. She has been out for about 8 months and in this area for 2.

Some funny things about my first week:

There is a little boy named  Aiden who is cousins with a family that was just baptized. He absolutely loves the church. Every day he is on the gospel library app reading the children's Book of Mormon. He wants to be baptized so bad, but his mom is very against it. She is pure crazy. Hefsy is her name. The first time I met her she welcomed us into her house with her loud voice and just went off talking about all this art in her house that she stole from different bars in Mexico. (for this next part everyone remember that I am a innocent girl born and raised in Utah) She goes around the house showing us her pets and art and what not. Then she starts telling me about her dog that died last year. Right then and there she dropped her pants to show me the tattoo of her dog on her upper thigh. Though she did have underwear on I was in complete shock. (And not hiding it very well haha) So she starts busting up laughing at me. But I was able to help her pray that night and the missionaries have never been able to get her to even stay in the room for a prayer! Any ways I hope her heart will soften towards her son wanting to join the church.

Favorite things:
On Thursdays we have service for several hours at a therapy center! Guess where it is located... on a horse farm!!! Even if our service is typically scooping poop or adding volunteer hours I am so happy to be there, I love it!

Challenge for everyone:
In meetings this week we talked a lot about studying. I want to challenge everyone to study Enos 1:3-4. And apply that we shouldn't study out of duty, but study out of desire.

Thank you everyone for your love and support. LOVE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU

Love,

Sister Carter
